The Anointing Oil of Aaron: How God Consecrated the First High Priest
The Anointing Oil of Aaron: God's Sacred Recipe for Consecration
One of the most remarkable passages in all of Scripture is found in Exodus 30:22-33, where God personally gives Moses the exact recipe for the holy anointing oil. This was no ordinary mixture—it was a sacred blend designed by the Creator Himself, reserved exclusively for consecrating the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priests who would serve before His presence.
Exodus 30:23-25 records: "Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant calamus, 500 shekels of cassia—all according to the sanctuary shekel—and a hin of olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil."
The First Anointing: Aaron Becomes High Priest
When Aaron was consecrated as Israel's first High Priest, Moses poured this precious oil over his head in an act of divine appointment. Psalm 133:2 beautifully describes this moment: "It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments."
This anointing was not merely symbolic—it represented the Holy Spirit's empowerment for sacred service. The oil flowing from Aaron's head to his garments signified that God's blessing would cover every aspect of the priest's ministry, from his thoughts to his actions.
The Five Ingredients and Their Spiritual Significance
Liquid Myrrh speaks of sacrifice and suffering—foreshadowing Christ's ultimate sacrifice. Cinnamon represents the sweetness and warmth of God's presence. Calamus (sweet cane) symbolizes uprightness and standing tall before God. Cassia was known for its protective and healing properties. And olive oil, the base of the entire mixture, is the universal biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit.
Together, these five ingredients created a fragrance unlike anything else in the ancient world—a scent that would forever be associated with the presence of God and the calling of His servants.
The Anointing Continues Today
While the exact formula of the Tabernacle anointing oil was set apart as holy, the practice of anointing with oil continues throughout the New Testament. James 5:14 instructs: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."
At Mount of Olives, we honor this ancient tradition by crafting anointing oils that incorporate many of the same biblical ingredients God specified—myrrh, cinnamon, cassia, and pure olive oil. Each blend is created with prayer and reverence for the sacred heritage of anointing.
