The Olive Trees of Gethsemane: Where Jesus Prayed Among the Ancient Groves

The Olive Trees of Gethsemane: Sacred Ground and Ancient Oil

On the western slope of the Mount of Olives, just across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem, stands one of the most sacred places in all of Christianity: the Garden of Gethsemane. Its very name reveals its purpose—Gethsemane comes from the Hebrew gat shemanim, meaning "oil press." This was the place where olives were crushed to yield their precious oil, and it was here that Jesus spent His final night in agonizing prayer before the cross.

Matthew 26:36-39 records: "Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, 'Sit here while I go over there and pray.' ... Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed."

Ancient Trees That Still Stand Today

Remarkably, some of the olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane are among the oldest living trees in the world. Scientific studies have dated several of these gnarled, magnificent trees to approximately 900 years old, though their root systems may be far more ancient. Olive trees are extraordinary in that even when the trunk dies, new shoots spring from the roots—a powerful picture of resurrection and eternal life.

These ancient trees have witnessed centuries of pilgrims, prayers, and tears shed on the same ground where Jesus wept. Their twisted trunks and spreading branches stand as living monuments to faithfulness and endurance through suffering.

The Olive Press: A Picture of Christ's Suffering

The symbolism of Gethsemane as an oil press is profoundly significant. To produce olive oil, olives must be crushed under tremendous pressure. In the same way, Jesus endured the crushing weight of the world's sin in this garden. Luke 22:44 tells us: "And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground."

Just as the crushing of olives releases the precious oil within, Christ's suffering released the healing, salvation, and anointing of the Holy Spirit for all who believe. Every drop of anointing oil carries this profound spiritual truth—that beauty, healing, and blessing often emerge from seasons of pressing and trial.

Connecting to This Sacred Heritage

At Mount of Olives, our very name honors this sacred place where prayer and olive oil intersect in the story of redemption. Our anointing oils collection is crafted with the same reverence for the olive and its biblical significance that has made it central to worship for thousands of years.

When you anoint with oil, you participate in a tradition that stretches back through Gethsemane, through the Tabernacle, all the way to the earliest acts of worship recorded in Scripture. As Psalm 52:8 declares: "I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever."
