How to Use Anointing Oil for Prayer: A Practical Guide

Anointing with oil is one of the oldest acts of devotion in Scripture — from the oil Jacob poured at Bethel (Genesis 28:18) to the fragrant anointing of Jesus at Bethany (John 12:3). If you are new to the practice, or simply want to bring more intention to it, this guide walks through the how, the when, and the why.

What anointing oil is (and is not)

Anointing oil is a physical symbol of consecration — setting apart a person, a moment, or a place for God. The oil itself carries no power; it points to the presence and promise of the One who does. As James 5:14 describes, believers anoint in the name of the Lord. The oil is the reminder; the prayer is the substance.

A simple way to begin

1. Choose a quiet moment. Morning devotion, before bed, or any time you want to mark a prayer with intention.

2. Place a small amount on your fingertip. A single drop is enough. Our oils are skin-safe, made with a cold-pressed olive oil base and biblical botanicals.

3. Apply to the forehead, wrists, or hands. Many believers trace a small cross while speaking their prayer aloud.

4. Pray specifically. Name the need — healing, peace, protection, gratitude — and anchor it in a verse. Psalm 23:5 is a beautiful place to start: "You anoint my head with oil; my cup runneth over."

Blessing your home

Households often anoint doorposts and window frames while praying over each room — a practice echoing Exodus 12 and Deuteronomy 6:9. A drop on the main doorpost, with a prayer of dedication, is a meaningful way to consecrate a new home or reset the atmosphere of a familiar one.

Which oil should I choose?

Each botanical in Scripture carries its own story. Frankincense & Myrrh — the gifts of the Magi — is our most loved blend for worship and intercession. Hyssop echoes David's prayer of cleansing in Psalm 51:7. Spikenard recalls the costly devotion poured out at Bethany. There is no wrong choice — only the one that helps you pray with more attention.

A word of care

Our oils are for external use. They double as skin-nourishing moisturizers, so a prayer-time drop on the wrists can stay with you through the day — a quiet reminder of the morning's consecration.
